Why Burr Coffee
Grinders? Welcome to our site and we hope we can help
you find the largest selection of the best burr coffee
grinders for the lowest prices. But you may be
wondering why the burr grinder and not the whirly blade type of
grinder that is readily available in just about every discount
store under the sun.
The truth of the matter is, you really
should not use the blade-type grinders simply because they
do an inferior job of grinding your coffee. In this case it is
true, you do get what you pay for. So you save money by
purchasing this type of grinder, but you lose out in the long
run because you can't enjoy the full flavor benefits of your
coffee.
What happens with these cheap grinders
is they simply pulverize the beans, and if you let it go on
long enough they will simply turn into powder. Not good! What
you want is a nice, even, consistent grind, and this is what
you will achieve with burr coffee grinders.
Here's the thing. No matter how you
brew your coffee, whether you use a drip brewer, a vacuum
brewer, a French press, or even a percolator (not recommended),
each of these methods comes down to one thing: water is poured
through ground coffee beans. If your coffee grounds are not
consistent, i.e. if they have variable sizes and consistency
such as grounds you would get from a blade grinder, it doesn't
matter how you are brewing your coffee because the equipment is
not going to be able to overcome the situation of having your
beans ground incorrectly. Only coffee beans ground with burr
coffee grinders can provide you with coffee of superb
flavor.
But still, why do burr coffee grinders
work better? They do because the burrs themselves are
incrementally very adjustable and can
produce much more consistent size grounds in the
necessary sizes to accommodate whatever brewing method you
employ.
The word burr actually refers to the
type of blades your grinder contains. Your simple blade machine
has nothing more than a strip of metal that will spin and there
are no adjustments to be made other than amount of time you
press the button. Similar to a food processor. Burr coffee
grinders use interlocking blades with several sharp edges
that fit together similar to the teeth of gears
in something like a watch. You achieve different grind
sizes by adjusting the blades closer together or farther
apart.
And why does it matter? Why are
different sizes of coffee grounds needed? Depending on how long
the coffee is going to be in contact with the water, you need
to have a larger or smaller ground. French press, for example,
uses a coarser grind generally since most people steep for
about 4 minutes. A fine grind at 4 minutes would produce
an over-extracted coffee. Believe me, we know this as this is
our favored method to brew coffee. An espresso would take a
very fine grind.
So use burr coffee grinders if you
want the best flavor from your coffee.
